Thanatourism, also known as dark tourism, is an exciting and educational mode of tourism. The Thanatourist is motivated by the desire for actual or symbolic encounters with death. They travel for many different reasons relating to death: To watch public executions, to travel to sites after death has occurred (battlefields) , to visit memorials or graves, to travel to reenactments (Civil War Reenactors) or to visit museums containing preserved bodies of significant people.
The Pearl Harbour in Hawaii is a famous Thanatourism location because it is a historical landmark, a memorial where you can grief or remember those who lost their lives during the attack on December 7th 1941 when Japan launched a surprise attack on America’s naval base. It is popular because this occurred less than a century ago and the survivors still live today.
Thanatourism is a good thing as it helps the world develop a better understanding of history as well as current affairs through a positive experience. It is also economically beneficial as travel companies and local businesses can profit from the increase in tourists. In addition, thanatourism can cause strong emotions which can broaden discussions about the ideologies of historical events.
Conversely, Thanatourism can be a bad thing. A tourist’s presence may be forcing people to relive a tragedy that they’d rather forget. In addition, the number of tourists in a thanatourism location can increase the amount of litter and vandalism of memorials which suggests a lack of respect towards those who lost their lives and the suffering of local people.
